The theme of last week’s Mobiography Showcase Challenge was ‘Motion’. From the photos submitted to the photo challenge, here is my selection of some of the best, all of which illustrate how different photographers have approached the subject of motion in their images. While many have used blur to convey the sense of motion, others have captured action and frozen the movement into a static image by using a high shutter speed.

Featured photographers this week include; Arturo Lopez, Araceli, Arkadiusz Durczewski, Paul Yan, Cheryl Philly, Jason Mills, Joanne Jackson, Kally Klonaris-Smythe, Laz Rubio, Lucrezia Herman, Nicki Fitz-Gerald, Rahul Mahale, and Stephanie Berger.

This photo is taken behind a protection fence using the logo (a V) of our city (Valencia) for all the races organized in its streets. Shot in burst mode and edited for correction of light in Snapseed.”

Untitled‘ by Arkadiusz Durczewski – “This photo was taken in Toruń, Poland. I walked between the Vistula river and the wall visible in the picture. It was already dark. However, this didn’t stop me from making a successful photo. Lamps that illuminated my path created an amazing scenery. I had to wait a few minutes for people and took this shot quickly. The light was great so I didn’t need to make a lot of photo edits. I used basic settings such as black and white and contrast.”

Ain’t asleep at the wheel‘ by Paul Yan – “Fleeting moments, we grab them with firm hands of intention. A man yawning his way back home on two wheels after work. Frozen the moving man in time, flowing the immobile street in motion. Shot on iPhone X with the ProCamera app manually set to 1/30s, ISO 160, pre-focus-locked on the path, panning to follow the subject. Post-processed with Snapseed.”

GREEN…

GREEN…‘ by Jason Mills – “This photo was taken using an iPhone 7. First I edited the photo in Retouch to remove a few black marks and some writing on the green background. I then took the photo into VSCO, which I’m a big fan off, and thought the G3 filter at +10 looked good, this darkened the bright green background. I added some grain at +1.5 and used a green shadows tint at +9 to finalise the image.

I took this photo while waiting for my bus home from work. I noticed the red haired lady coming towards me and got set to snap the photo side on. It all happened quiet quickly and the blur created from her walking past I think made this image instead of it being pin point sharp and focused.

Water sprouts‘ by Joanne Jackson – “We have these water sprouts in our local shopping center in Chino Hills California. I took the picture with my iphone 6x and then edited it on the iPhone provided editing tools. I like the way some of the kids are almost hidden in the water.”

Art in Motion

Art in Motion‘ by Kally Klonaris-Smythe – “I attended the opening night of an art show and was particularly drawn to the paintings by Tina Klonaris-Robinson. Inspired by her work, I edited this photo to mimic  the medallions in the background and wanted to capture the movement of the onlookers. I was able to create this effect using the Hipstamatic App. Lens: Tachman, Film: Blinken, Flash: Cherry Shine. “

Everybody wants to rule the world

Everybody wants to rule the world‘ by Laz Rubio – “This seagull photo was taken at a local beach. While hanging out with some family and friends. The seagulls usually fly all around you, mostly waiting for you to drop some food. This photo was taken with my iPhone on live mode. Which in my opinion is one of the iPhones best photo features, especially for action shots. You can then edit and find the perfect frame within that picture.  I cropped the photo into a square leaving the beach people in the background. Edited in Snapseed using glamour glow and pushing color saturation up a bit.”

Untitled‘ by Lucrezia Herman – “This shot was taken on a very hot evening in New York two years ago and was a happy accident. I was just testing my then, new iPhone 6s Plus, to see how well it would capture the colored lights on top the three buildings in the center when this guy wandered into the frame, waiting patiently for the traffic light to change. I wasn’t aware of the truck until after the fact!

Taken with Hipstamatic (still my preferred app for capturing photos), it was converted to mono in Snapseed.”

“She runs without the look of feet” – Emily Dickinson

“She runs without the look of feet” – Emily Dickinson‘ by Nicki Fitz-Gerald – “I was walking around the beautiful historic backstreets of Dorchester one lunchtime. I love this area because of the history and particularly love taking photos of the old buildings. This particular day I was walking between a row of old Cottages when this cat descended from its post and began to move towards me. I love experimenting with apps, especially apps that interpret photos into a more painterly style and at the time this was shot I’d been experimenting with Bluristic, an app that tracks moving subjects keeping them relatively sharp while at the same time blurring the background. So I achieved the main effect by using Bluristic and tweaked it in Snapseed to give a slight vignette and make some minor colour adjustments.”

Golden Days in life‘ by Rahul Mahale

What goes up…

What goes up…‘ by Stephanie Berger – “Cupid’s span is a prominent sculpture on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. Basically it’s a giant bow and arrow. The base of the bow is the perfect angle to climb up on but you have to have a running start as the angle is quite steep and goes up about 30 feet in the air, and while you are not supposed to climb it’s a favorite of my two girls to test their skills.

This image is of my 8 year old getting her running start up the bow – with the bay bridge in the background for perspective.

It was shot on my iphone 7 via the Hipstamatic app (the majority of my my feed are pure hipstamatics) The combo is AnneMarie, Aristotle and TripleCrown – no other adjustments.”
