The theme of this week’s Mobiography Showcase Challenge was ‘Abstract’. The aim of this challenge was for photographers to submit their best abstract images. The results have shown how differently people have approached this subject. Many have used close cropping in order to focus in on a small part of a subject to create a composition that has an abstract feel. Others have played with angles, with shadows or used minimalist backgrounds to create an abstract effect.

Featured photographers this week include; @el_rubins_ed, Valeria Cammareri, Jen Burnett, Evelyne Sieber, Pascal Verhulst, Ithalu Dominguez, Ann Hecht, Barbara Frish, Laurence Bouchard, Charles Read, @aracely_46 and Venkatesulu.

Finding Yourself

Finding Yourself‘ by @el_rubins_ed – “This photo was originally taken in Black and White with iphone 5s and was edited with Snapseed App. The title is “Finding yourself” and the Story is: ‘Vanesa tells us that for her being alone in the forest helps her to reflect on his personal life and the people around him, and improve their relationship with them. ‘”

The Long Wave

The Long Wave‘ by Valeria Cammareri – “This giant wave is a wall,  core of the Mudec (Museum of Cultures, Milan) by the British  architect David Chipperfield . It is a fascinating structure in opaque crystal with a free and organic shape that breaks the geometry and generates a covered square illuminated even at night. To emphasize its abstract aspect I photographed it without any reference to the context in which it stands. Shot with iPhone 6s and edited with Snapseed (I flipped the image and added saturation to the green).”

The Broad

The Broad‘ by Jen Burnett – “This is The Broad museum in downtown Los Angeles. Having seen many photos of the building prior I knew I wanted to check it out the next time I was in LA. The porous facade which covers the building almost entirely creates eye pleasing patterns which immediately had my attention. I shot this on iPhone X using the native camera and edited it in VSCO. I cropped the image to a square when I posted it on Instagram, which balances out the photo and also brings emphasis to the indented window, which I call the divot, that  creates a nice curve along the plane. “

Up, Up and Away

Up, Up and Away‘ by Evelyne Sieber – “I took this picture at a newly opened arts and heritage site in Hong Kong. I only got a shot  from below as the whole staircase was still closed to the public but already many visitors wanted to capture it and there was no time to experiment with the composition. The black and white conversion gives the image an abstract and minimal feel, it didn’t need any other editing.”

Triangled

Triangled‘ by Pascal Verhulst – “This particular picture was taken on a trip with some friends to the wonderful city of Rotterdam (Netherlands). I really was surprised by the many amazing architectural structures you find over there, so I had to take some pictures of all that abstract beauty with my phone. This one was taken with the hipstamatic app using the Lowy lens and Blackeys Supergrain combo and worked out pretty well i think. Only thing I did do is rotate it very slightly in Snapseed.”

Untitled

Untitled‘ by Ithalu Dominguez – “When I went for a walk, I found dandelion seeds with water drops on it. I used my iPhone with the 30x microscope lens from Dckina and I edited the pictures in Afterlight 2.”

Dune stripe sculpture

Dune stripe sculpture‘ by Ann Hecht – “The dunes change every day. Sometimes gales blow relentlessly and construct wonderful sand sculptures. This is one of them. I did very little editing except for sharpening and contrast in order to bring out the lines in the sand.”

I saw you on the train…where were you going?

I saw you on the train…where were you going?‘ by Barbara Frish – @iphonecameragirl – “This was shot on an iPhone 7plus and minimally edited in Snapseed. I was standing on the train platform trying to focus on the person in the train window when the train pulled out.  This is the result. “

Running on empty

Mobiography Showcase Challenge: 12 Beautifully Abstract Inspired Smartphone Photos 9

Running on empty‘ by Laurence Bouchard – “‘Running on empty’ was shot early in the morning in a Tokyo park.  I’d left the park a few weeks earlier and noticed the running lines below as I crossed over the bridge.  However, late in the afternoon the whole scene was in the shade so I made a note to return.

I had to cycle past the park a few weeks later for work in the morning so I set off 30 mins earlier to get a few shots.  This was my favorite of the lot and I then flipped it and made a few tweaks in Snapseed.”

White marble midnight blues

Mobiography Showcase Challenge: 12 Beautifully Abstract Inspired Smartphone Photos 10

White marble midnight blues‘ by Charles Read – “A couple of years before Santiago Calatrava’s now – iconic WTC Transportation Hub (aka Occulus) was completed, the long underground passageway connecting subway lines with One World Trade Center was opened, teasing the look and feel of the structure as it would ultimately be revealed. This corridor is much more heavily trafficked now (and the long wall is covered with a massive video screen running its entire length), so it’s especially nice to remember this space in its pristine, minimal (and most abstract) form. One night, right around midnight, a woman in blue suddenly materialized in the empty space – can you hear the echoes of her steps on the white marble as she hurries through? (iPhone 5s edited in Snapseed)”
