The theme of this weeks showcase of mobile photography looks at 10 iPhone photos that use elements of the rule of thirds in their composition. The rule of thirds is a very effective and powerful way to compose your photos and suggests that if you place your subject in key points in your photographs frame then you’ll be able to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing and interesting photograph. The photos in this weeks showcase illustrate this beautifully.

Featured photographers this week include Clarice, Mohsen Chinehkesh, Tomaso Belloni, Dariusz Sobiecki, drzzz1977, street level, Michaela Meerkatz, nhec? and Marzia Bellini.

You

Clarice

You‘ by Clarice – “‘You’ is actually a self-portrait and was a response to a photography challenge prompt. It was taken at 4:54p.m., after I had just dropped my teenage daughter off for dance class. This blue wall belongs to a theatre around the corner from the dance studio. I had been going non-stop all day with busy-ness, which kills my creative spirit. I came out to the blue wall, and with people walking by me the whole time, I just did my thing. I felt so much better! I was feeling grateful for color, and my daughter’s passion for dance. I processed this photo with VSCO preset C1.”

Mohsen Chinehkesh

Untitled‘ by Mohsen Chinehkesh – “It was about 7 months that I hadn’t find the chance to go out for photography. Last week I had a trip to Shush which is one the oldest and most important historical cities of Iran located near the ancient City of Susa. I thought now it’s the time to start taking photos again. I had a photowalk with one my friends around the city and took this photograph near the archaeological site of Susa. At the background of the image you can see Shush Castle which is located in the ruins of the ancient city of Susa.”

The choice is yours

Tomaso Belloni

The choice is yours‘ by Tomaso Belloni – “Walking in Beijing you can always find opportunities for a photo if you know how to look. This composition just appeared in front of me as I was walking to dinner with colleagues after a work meeting and it did not escape me. I loved the combination of rectangles, lines and colors. Did someone just go in? Or out? I edited it with Snapseed, as usual, then into Oggl (Akira lens, my favorite, and Rasputin film).”

Chatting On Steps Gdynia

Dariusz Sobiecki

Chatting On Steps Gdynia‘ by Dariusz Sobiecki – “While I was taking pictures of the newly-opened Gdynia Film School (Poland), I was obviously keen to frame intriguing, “timeless” moments. Luck came when I was watching the cinema cafe below, The sight of two girls sitting on huge steps and engaged in a casual conversation was irresistible. And the shadow play ….

I did all the basic edition with Snapseed and the finishing touches of black and white conversion with Pixlr. Camera: IPhone 6+”

The last laugh

drzzz1977

The last laugh‘ by drzzz1977 – “The photo ‘The Last Laugh’ was taken in Omotosando, Tokyo. I’d just come out of the metro when I saw this huge billboard with an old man’s face laughing & advertising something..

Straightaway I was thinking what a great backdrop it would make. Fortunately, it was raining that day which helped give me an idea for the title. It just took a little time before the right person passed, umbrella in hand, to fit the backdrop. I liked the idea that the old man on the billboard was kind of looking down and laughing at this guy passing him by in the rain – maybe they’d been enemies / rivals but now he was finally having the last laugh.

I then edited the photo in Snapseed. I tweaked the image a bit and applied a retrolux filter.”

Tokyo Tower

street level

Tokyo Tower‘ by street level – “While traveling in Tokyo with my wife, the Tower was one of our destination spots. Standing around deciding whether or not to make the climb to the top, I started looking for photo opportunities. Looking up, I thought the sky was rather plain, so I included the street lamp in the top of the frame. Processing was done with Hipstamatic, using a red cast to compliment the color of the Tower.”

Untitled

Michaela Meerkatz2

Untitled‘ by Michaela Meerkatz – “I live in Central Italy near the Adriatic coast and in winter we sometimes have foggy days which is great when I have time to stroll around shooting inner and outer landscapes. When I took this one, it perfectly reflected the mist and the melancholy inside me.

It was shot with the iPhone 4S using Hipstamatic 278/Oggl app.

Meditation

Michaela Meerkatz

Meditation‘ by Michaela Meerkatz – “Some months ago I’ve been to Zürich and visited the Krypta underneath the Grossmünster (cathedral). When I entered, there was a lady sitting on the floor chanting in a monotone. Her tones were beautifully carried by the acoustics of this ancient space which created an atmosphere of meditative silence.

Seasonal rains

Marzia Bellini

Seasonal rains‘ by Marzia Bellini – “This image has been shot in june just after lunch in a very dizzy and cold day (for the season). I was just pondering the weather when the man with the umbrella entered in the frame so I just took the opportunity. I have edited it using photoshop to enhance high and low lights plus the usual step in VSCO to process it woth the LV1 filter. I love this preset because it enhances the colors and the contrast without giving the image a fake look.”
