The theme of last week’s Mobiography Photo Challenge was ‘Simplicity’. For this challenge the Mobiography community was asked to share their best smartphone photos that summed up the idea of Simplicity. The photos featured in this showcase illustrate how different photographers have approached this theme. Negative space was a common technique used to create a sense of space and an uncluttered composition. Other photographers chose to capture simple patterns or plain backgrounds.

Featured photographers this week include: @arashrimus, @gerbs62, @klimtt, @kunalr24, @lucdigital, @manojh93, @paule_novemb, @Pennijam, @pixels.for_.life, @rawsdeb, @reneetakespics, Elaine Taylor, @susanblanda and @tanvi2016.

Imagine a lonesome Pink balloon in a Pink room with no one to cheer up

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 15 Wonderfully Simple Smartphone Photos 1

Imagine a lonesome Pink balloon in a Pink room with no one to cheer up‘ by @arashrimus – “I captured this photo with my iPhone 7. Photography has always worked as some sort of therapy to me; it always gives me back a rich sense of comfort and satisfaction as if I’m self medicating myself with unexpectedly endless goodies. The balloon photograph was captured on a day I felt particularly low, I looked up to the ceiling and there was an unsuspecting balloon left wandering from the last night’s party; Its simplicity and its unsuspecting presence got me inspired to see beauty even in the simplest things in life.”

Strength and Beauty

Strength and Beauty‘ by @gerbs62 – “Photo taken at Petit Jean State Park with my iPhone 7 and edited with Snapseed.”

“If I saw something in my viewfinder that looked familiar to me, I would do something to shake it up.” – Garry Winogrand

“If I saw something in my viewfinder that looked familiar to me, I would do something to shake it up.” – Garry Winogrand‘ by @klimtt – “Last year I went to France to visit my daughters who live in Europe. It was 7 December 2017, about 08:30 in the morning on the plane over France, more specifically above Monthyon,
The passengers in front of me like I, were tinted with the color of the sky outside the plane.

It was the look of the girl two armchairs in front of me, that made me change the lenses of my iPhone 7+.

In the original image, she has the same pink light reflected throughout the cabin, but as this photo challenge was about “SIMPLICITY” I edited the photo to focus and enhance on the beautiful simplicity of her eyes, that tells me a whole imagined story.
I always liked to interfere with nankin on the photos after revealing the negatives before the digital era, but it was with the advent of the iPhone and the App Store applications that my work got more attention because it coincided with the fact that I had more time to dedicate to, and I could develop an entire visual language based on my interest.
I edited the photo with Snapseed, Hipstamatic, and ArtStudio, and Superimpose.”

Untitled‘ by @lucdigital – “I (literally) stumbled upon these seedheads in the grounds of Nottingham Castle, and brought them home as I’d never seen anything quite like them before. A bit of research revealed that they were from a London Plane Tree – not rare, but not a species I’d ever noticed. The photo was taken with an iPhone 6s Plus with the ping pong ball sized subjects placed on a piece of drawing paper and lit with natural light from a north-west facing window. The mono conversion was done in Snapseed. “

Those who fly solo have the strongest wings

Those who fly solo have the strongest wings‘ by @manojh93 – “I was having a walk alongside the romantic and beautiful Venice canals and, normally all you can see are couples everywhere but, on this occasion it was interesting that I spotted a lonely old man enjoying the sun and the view. So, I wanted to capture the moment. It is one of my favorite photos. A simple image with no vibrant colours and calm sky also with not much editing, an eye soothing view. “

Grey textures again

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 15 Wonderfully Simple Smartphone Photos 7

Grey textures again‘ by @paule_novemb – “Human eyes are naturally attracted by bright and bold colours, and I’m no exception. But the amazing subtlety of grey also fascinates me. This underdog of colour forces us to really see and appreciate the textures. That’s what caught my attention in these simple wall and branches : nothing but textures.”

Untitled‘ by @Pennijam – “The photo was taken in Havana, Cuba when we visited the practice session for a well known Cuban dance group. Although well known for their salsa, the we’re practicing ballet on the day we were there. The photo was taken on my iPhoneX and edited in Retouch and Snapseed. “

City boii

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 15 Wonderfully Simple Smartphone Photos 9

City boii‘ by @pixels.for_.life – “So this ‘City boii’ image was made a few months ago. I wanted to test out my new cellphone camera so I went for a roam about about near my house.  I didn’t know about this place, a friend told me about it. It’s a small settlement of locals by a river and when I arrived I found these crazy kids bathing in the river and jumping in one after the other. These kids don’t have very much but still what a smile on their faces, like they have everything.”

My pup and the snow

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 15 Wonderfully Simple Smartphone Photos 10

My pup and the snow‘ by @rawsdeb – “This photo was taken on my iPhone XS. It was taken of my pup, Cozi, after our first snow of the season in New Hampshire. This was her first experience of seeing snow.  Needless to say, she loves it! The photo was edited in Snapseed and converted to black and white. “

Rule Breaker

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 15 Wonderfully Simple Smartphone Photos 11

Rule Breaker‘ by @reneetakespics – “The shot was taken on a photo walk with my Instagram buddies in the San Francisco Mission District. When I saw how well one of my friends’ shoes matched the wall she kindly agreed to get down on the ground and put her feet up. I used Snapseed for a bit of straightening and cropping.”

Teeny tiny Autumn leaves

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 15 Wonderfully Simple Smartphone Photos 12

Teeny tiny Autumn leaves‘ by Elaine Taylor – “I was walking my neighbour’s dog and noticed these tiny leaves on the ground. The colours really stood out so I immediately decided they’d feature in my 365 project photo for that day.  I lay them on a large piece of white card, keeping the composition simple so that the leaves and their beautiful colours would be the only focus.  I took the card outside for better light, but the breeze that day was a bit of a challenge. I held my phone high above the card, deliberately leaving enough white space around the leaves so that I could play with the crop later, and took two quick shots – which was literally all I got before the breeze blew the delicate leaves out of shot. Shot and edited through Hipstamatic (Beard/Irom 2000) on my iPhoneX.”

There’s a special kind of beauty that lights up a room and warms weary souls. It’s a precious energy that we wear in the world. An energy that has little to do with dress or style – and has everything to do with honoring our compassionate heart

‘There’s a special kind of beauty that lights up a room and warms weary souls. It’s a precious energy that we wear in the world. An energy that has little to do with dress or style – and has everything to do with honoring our compassionate heart.‘ by @susanblanda – “This image was shot an edited on an iPhone 7 plus. It represents my feelings about femininity and physical beauty, as reflected in the title. The photo also highlights my love for minimal composition, quality of light, and emotional connection. These elements are key players for me in the creation process. I edited my photos primarily with the Snapseed, VSCO, Mextures, Stackables and Enlight iOS app. When I edit I use an intuitive flow process – going back and forth between apps until the image appears as I see it in my mind’s eye. “

Simple things make great

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 15 Wonderfully Simple Smartphone Photos 14

Simple things make great‘ by @tanvi2016 – ” I absolutely love beaches. Sun, sand, water, sports, all of it. This photograph was taken on my trip to Goa, India. One morning I had gone for a walk on the beach, and the idea was to keep clicking the surroundings and make great memories. This was also one of the few beaches I had visited where the shore was full of shells and I am a collector. I was walking and picking a few shells when I came across the starfish. It was like perfectly framed and I didn’t waste anytime clicking it. I took the photo with my iPhone 6S and edited it using Snapseed. I use it for all my photos amd find it very easy to use.”
