The theme for last week’s Mobiography smartphone photo challenge was ‘Leading lines’. Leading lines is one of my favourite compositional techniques and the Mobiography community rose to the challenge and submitted some superb images on this subject. All images in this weeks showcase illustrate how different photographers have used leading lines in their photos.

Featured photographers this week include: @alice1280, @harnaka_harto, @ianconningham, @bob___holman, @chasread, @rawsdebbie, @pati.john, @fredverbeke, @_plantmyheart_, @miakbh, @myhipstamaticpics, @aeriel.orndorff.photography, @2kgrafx, @tintoftina, and @roelwildervanck.

Negotiating the shadows

‘Negotiating the shadows’ by @alice1280 – “I love looking for shadows and light in the dunes but I seldom have anyone with me. Looking down from a high dune I could see this picture and asked my person to walk
down. As usual I took too many pictures and chose this one to convert to black and white.”

‘Untitled’ by @ianconningham – “This was taken at Embankment underground station in London. I don’t remember where I was going, but I do remember that it was fairly quiet and everybody else that had got off the tube was behind me. I’ve always loved the long corridors and lines that can stretch out ahead in the underground but they’re so often filled with people. I knew that I had to be quick and luckily my phone was already in my hand as I’d just selected some music to play. I momentarily stopped and took about 6 shots. Some in portrait and some in landscape. I edited using Hipstamatic (with only the Jane Lens I think!) and then fine tuned it using the standard iPhone tools.”

Airhead

‘Airhead’ by @bob___holman – “I did an Alleyways of Marlborough project during lockdown (which got a 6 page feature in Black + White Photography Magazine (@bwphotomag on Instagram) latest issue) and while doing this I came upon this alley, with some birds flying about it. Whilst walking home on the same day I saw a silhouette icon for a local independent hairdresser., and this double exposure just came to mind. It was achieved at that moment by sitting on a pavement seat and creating it all in Snapseed. It took about 10 minutes, all in.”

‘It’s a great day to be grateful!’ by @rawsdebbie – “We took a trip to the Lake District in New Hampshire and this dock spoke to me. It was near sunset and I shot this on my iPhone 12 Pro Max with long exposure. ”

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 15 Wonderful Leading Line Inspired Smartphone Photos 5

‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ by @pati.john – ” Photo ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ belongs to the series – ‘Different shades of art in isolation’ – created because of the pandemic. In that period I was avoiding pointless visits in the different buildings in order to protect myself and others from the increasing Covid-19. When the restrictions were largely abolished I decided to supplement my missing gallery with additional photos of architecture. In this particular case, it was one of the iconic, Dutch, modern architectural building: City Hall of Nieuwegein, the city, where I live in.

Accidentally, I had two new wonderful photographical aids, I mean, additional circular filters that needed to be tested inside with a low light considering that previous tests in full sun and with a clear sky had turned out brilliantly. I was curious how can I get leading lines and manage together with night shot and lots of fluorescent light. Both filters used in the same time were just perfect to combine: Star filter created beautiful lamp flares on the lightbulbs and the ND 8 filter created a smooth effect on the linear light sources situated on both sides of the stairs.

However, I wanted to focus on an indoor architectural theme so I was curious to discover if minimalism could be precedent in this shot. It was unintentionally possible to touch the other passion of mine: geometrical shapes with availability of a human element, that unexpectedly dared too came into my frame while taking this shot. That was exactly what I was missing in my image to make it completed. I used an iPhone 7 for my monochromatic photo. By using a Star +6 and Neutral Density 8 stops filters while creating the image in a low light condition, I was able to achieve a very illuminated image. Mostly I love to work with different apps in a post-processing but this time I used only Snapseed to make some basic corrections such as of shadows, highlights and contrast changes to purifying the achieved effect. ”

‘Untitled’ by @fredverbeke – “I went to this place with my DSLR to make some long exposure pictures – which I also did – but ended up making more pictures with my iPhone. I like the simplicity and how the lines lead you through the image. I processed the image in Lightroom mobile. I didn’t do too much, but I changed it to black and white to emphasise the shapes and lines. ”

THE TUBE!

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 15 Wonderful Leading Line Inspired Smartphone Photos 8

‘THE TUBE!’ by @myhipstamaticpics – “The photo was taken on a trip I took to London in 2018. I am a teacher from Connecticut and have the summers off and so I was there for a month and took hundreds of Hipstamatic shots with my iPhone. I have been using the app since it came out and hardly ever use an SLR any more. The Lens and Film used were Salvador 84 Lens, Claunch 72 Film. There was no extra processing done to the photo other than to use Hipstamatic. I almost never double bake my Hipstamatic pics, they are what they are, thanks to this amazing app. I found The Tube to be a fascinating place to shoot street shots and have many different ones. This one I experimented with a few times, with different combinations, and found this combination to be the bast one. ”

You Light Up My World Like Nobody Else

‘You Light Up My World Like Nobody Else’ by @aeriel.orndorff.photography – “I took this photo on my trip to LA California in January of 2020. The Urban Lights location was on my list of places I had to visit while I was there. This location is one of the most visited tourist spots in LA and for great reason.

I love looking for different perspectives especially looking up. There is so much interest in this shot with all the lights and the palm trees. Everyone takes the same shots of this spot so by looking up you find a whole new perspective.”

The Better Way…

‘The Better Way…’ by @2kgrafx – “I was on the way to a dental appointment and took the TTC (Toronto Transit Corp) during rush hour and surprisingly there was virtually no ridership at that moment. My ‘go to apps’ for iPhone editing are Snapseed and Photoshop Express. I applied a slight HDR edit snd popped the contrast slightly.”

Sphere Endless area of patterns

‘Sphere Endless area of patterns’ by @tintoftina – “This photo was taken few years ago in Basel where I was with my colleagues on excursion of our profession.

The Basel Messe had this awesome entry hall with skylight that took totally my attention and I took several pics of it.

The original shot was taken with an iPhone 5 and now that I have iPhone Xr, I was able to modify and better it for publication again and make it black and white this time too. ”

‘Untitled’ by @roelwildervanck – “During a short vacation to Miami, I was at the Vizcaya Museum. A National Historic Landmark in the shape of a waterfront mansion in Mediterranean Revival architecture. During the visit I came across this spiral staircase. When I looked down, I immediately noticed the shapes and the color contrast. A captivating image to capture.”

‘Untitled’ by @harnaka_harto – “This photo taken at a business district area in Jakarta city. This area has some skyscraper buildings that stand closely.

It wass quite tricky when I took this photo since the iPhone was facing to the sky, but I didn’t want to lay down at the floor.

But with some trial, I managed to take some photos.”
