The theme for last week’s Mobiography smartphone photo challenge was ‘Movement and Motion’. For this challenge the Mobiography community were asked to photos that conveyed a sense of motion and energy. The use of motion blur was a common approach that participants took. Others chose to freeze their subjects in the middle of a dynamic action to convey the feeling of motion.

Featured photographers this week include: @aniraz95, @ceci.fogel_.glusman, @corcoransuzy, @harnaka_harto, @jawdoc2, @krimzenphotography, @ppol_bcn, @royiphoneography, @susanblanda, @venkatesulu, @alante30mp, @detailsofberlin, @oldhamjaz, and @iphotokunst.

Volleyball on Tiny Planet

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 14 Movement & Motion Inspired Smartphone Photos 1

‘Volleyball on Tiny Planet’ by @aniraz95 – “While I was in Kota Kinabalu in 2020, I visited the Tanjung Aru beach and there was a group of three boys playing volleyball on the tiled walkway by the beach. I remember feeling excited and happy because I did not have much opportunity taking photographs of people in action and this was a good opportunity. I took several photos of the boys playing volleyball in all angles possible and they were happy to ignore me and continued playing naturally. I edited this photo by cropping and used the Tiny Planets App which enhanced and focused on the solo player throwing a ball in the air. Then I used Hipstamatic App (Nara Hipstapak) to give the photo colour and texture. All captures and edits were done on iPhone. ”

‘Untitled’ by @corcoransuzy – “I was determined to see Debrah Cheetham’s debut as an operatic composer in Sydney. Unusually I went by myself, which gave me ample time to take photos. This little girls’ repeated twirling caught my eye and I was fortunate enough to capture it on my smartphone, an iPhone 5S.

I always try to frame the shot I want, so I have to use minimal cropping when editing. But as I was capturing her motion, there was less time to frame the shot, I took several images, this was the best. I would have cropped it until satisfied, usually tweaking the crop for a while – this is often the hardest decision in editing for me. My editing process is overridingly guided by feel. I move the editing tools sliders until I am satisfied; but the final tweaks of the exact amount of exposure, saturation etc is determined by the intuitive sense of what feels right. This image was best desaturated. Although it is difficult to remember exactly what edits I used, I may have used a black & white filter in editing, but more typically I desaturate the image. Often the moment is difficult to capture in the image. But this was one of those elusive serendipitous times when everything aligned. ”

Walking to the mosque

‘Walking to the mosque’ by @harnaka_harto – “This photo taken on my pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. In front of one mosque there is a yard that has many doves. When somebody crosses the yard to the mosques, the doves fly off together. I saw this as being a very interesting moment to capture a photo. So I set my position and waited for somebody to cross the yard. Luckily, I got someone with a green umbrella crossing as many doves flew around them.”

Take me to your leader

‘Take me to your leader’ by @jawdoc2 – “I went down to check out a new sculpture in Vancouver called “Proud Youth” by artist Chen Wenling. I wanted see a different perspective of this much photographed piece of art. It was a bright, sunny day and I loved the shadow of the sculpture. It reminded me of an alien from outer space. I patiently waited for a jogger to run by, thereby creating movement and interplay between the two.

Shot on my iPhone XS Max, flipped 180 degrees and converted to black and white, all using the iPhone software.”

Beach Volley Ball

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 14 Movement & Motion Inspired Smartphone Photos 6

‘Beach Volley Ball’ by @krimzenphotography – “This photo was taken in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, where we were on holiday recently. A group of very competitive and obviously very talented volleyballers were playing on the beach. Whilst they were competitive they were also having a fun time laughing and joking with each other. It was fantastic to watch.

To edit the photo I used PhotoRoom to motion blur the background at 100% then motion blurred the subject at a lesser percentage. I then used Snapseed’s Lens Blur to blur parts of the background to soften it.”

Barcelona

‘Barcelona’ by @ppol_bcn – “I am a big lover of natural symmetries, and taking the picture on this freeway with the long exposure was perfect for the symmetry and to show the movement of the cars reflecting the end of the day, and the return home of the people.”

Jumper Boy

‘Jumper Boy’ by @royiphoneography – “This is a very memorable photo for me. Summertime boys jump into the holy river The Ganga for refreshment and having fun. I move around the ghats of the river Ganga at Varanashi to show this boy like he was flying into the sky and jumping so high. I captured this moment into my iPhone 12 Pro Max. The photo was edited using VSCO.”
