For the challenge you were asked to think about images that show off the shapes and patterns created by shadows and the abstract compositions that can be created using shadows or the moodiness and atmosphere between harsh sunlight and shadows. Here is a selection of some of the photos submitted to the challenge.

Watching the sun go down

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 14 Stunning Shadow and Silhouette Inspired Smartphone Photos 1

‘Watching the sun go down’ by @aniraz95 – “This photo was taken at my office. I placed my iPhone against the glass wall and tapped to focus on the sky and buildings, ensuring as much symmetry as I could, then I ran and stood by the window watching the sunset view while the phone set off the countdown. It took me a few takes! I love that the little detail of my dress sleeve was able to be captured by the smartphone!

I adjusted alignment and tone using the Snapseed app. ”

Reality is imaginary…

‘Reality is imaginary…’ by @bajonarcea – “This photograph was taken with the native camera of an iPhone X and edited with the Hispamatic app. It was taken at the Niemeyer Center in Aviles, in Asturias in northern Spain. The place is endless lines and curves; and on days of high light the game it gives is impressive and I just wanted to play with those lines and shadows from the dome of the Center.”

Portrait: A dear friend

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 14 Stunning Shadow and Silhouette Inspired Smartphone Photos 3

‘Portrait: A dear friend’ by @bethkarbe – “I was inspired to take this portrait of a dear friend who was bravely navigating an acute period of grief over a devastating personal loss. Knowing her as well as I do, I thought she might find it oddly healing to “document” this painful passage. And I was right. She agreed.

When I arrived at her house she was in the bathroom shaving her head. I waited until she was finished and we found a place in her house with sharp light and shadow, to mirror the harsh and cutting edges of her emotional pain. We settled on several spots, but ultimately I thought this one was best.

I took several series of her that afternoon with my iPhone 13 and shot in Hipstamatic, using John S “lens” and Blackeys B+W “film” (no flash). The photos needed little editing, but I tweaked with Snapseed (on my phone) and softened the shadows and her skin tones very slightly. ”

Life moves on and so should we..

‘Life moves on and so should we..’ by @ellocofish – “The shot itself was taken at the MCA in Sydney, during the fascinating exhibit by Lindy Lee ‘Moon in a Dewdrop’. I’d seen this on Instagram and thought I might be able to create something whilst there.

It was shot using the wide angle mode on my iPhone 11 Pro Max. The installation, although stationary, looked like the inside of a watch/clock from a certain perspective and I felt that if I inserted myself in the right spot I could get both a still and something which I could first edit for a cinematic effect in Snapseed and then animate parts of the structure in an app called Plotograph.”

Follow your Dreams

‘Follow your Dreams’ by @hishamkhonji – “While I was at Yas Shopping Mall in Abu Dhabi. I spotted the fine reflection of the ornate glass ceiling on the floor giving it a lovely pattern. I figured it would be nice to have a subject in this composition, so I waited until the couple had passed. It turned to be an amazing combination (Shadows, silhouette and the floor). I knew this image would stand out because of the good contrast and composition. I took this photo with my iPhone 12 Pro Max and edited it with Lightroom Mobile.”

Golden hour fishing

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 14 Stunning Shadow and Silhouette Inspired Smartphone Photos 6

‘Golden hour fishing’ by @jsmayores – “This photo was taken during the golden hour in Dubai creek last May 2020 about 6pm. I noticed that my fisherman friend was in between me and the sunset thus presenting a good silhouette composition. As he was about to unhook the fish, I positioned near the ground to be able to frame the mackerel directly unto the golden sun. I clicked a couple of shots from my iPhone 6+ and was able to capture an interesting photograph depicting a seemingly flying fish with a golden background.

Editing was done through the iPhone editing tool just to highlight the contrast of the subject against the golden sun.”

Migratory Bird, Flying High

‘Migratory Bird, Flying High’ by @miakbh – “I took the picture a beautiful evening – early autumn – in a solitary moment all alone in the field, visiting Samsoe – a tiny Danish island in the Kattegat sea. It was my second visit at this wonderful little island – and hopefully not the last. ”

Sand tracks and shadows

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 14 Stunning Shadow and Silhouette Inspired Smartphone Photos 8

‘Sand tracks and shadows’ by @pennijam – “This photo was taken early one winter’s morning on the massive sand dunes behind Stockton Beach, an unpopulated 32km beach in New South Wales, Australia. My husband and I were the only people around and there was an ethereal feel to the place. The light was low so the shadows were long and there were interesting patterns in the sand – there was photographic inspiration everywhere! I did minimal editing in Snapseed.”

Seek Solace in Solitude

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 14 Stunning Shadow and Silhouette Inspired Smartphone Photos 9

‘Seek Solace in Solitude’ by @saminnnimas – “The moon was an immersive installation art by Daniel Arsham for Nuit Blanche, an annual art exhibition in Toronto.

2019 was a very confusing time in my life and was reaching its peak near the end of the year. The environment around this installation art was cold and silent, a zen environment. I was completely dazed as I stood there in the cold watching people pass by, no thoughts in my mind but calmness.

I wanted to capture what I was feeling at that moment and waited for a single person to pass by to capture the scene. Hence the title, “Seek Solace in Solitude”

It didn’t take much to process the photo as the silhouette came out great directly using an iPhone X. Later I used Lightroom mobile to play around with the light tones to darken the surroundings and create a minimalist photo.”

Meditating man

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 14 Stunning Shadow and Silhouette Inspired Smartphone Photos 10

‘Meditating man’ by @tenderfoot_photo – “I awoke around 4am to make the drive to Galveston, TX to photograph the sunrise. I had planned to capture some shots underneath one of the main piers, but when I arrived there was a team of photographers already there for a professional photo-shoot. I have to admit, I felt disappointed and a bit out of my league. But I couldn’t waste time doubting myself, so I quickly decided to move on and find another interesting spot or subject to shoot. I noticed a man who was wading in the shallow ocean waters. I watched him for a while. He seemed to be cold and a little out of breath.

When he walked back to the beach shore, he was shaking. I wondered if he was ok. Then, I watched as he took to a meditative position. Slowly, his body relaxed and I saw his chest move with the rhythm of his breathing. He was no longer shaking and this stranger, who moments ago looked weak and out of breath, appeared strong and calm. I wanted to position the frame so that he was backlit by the sun, as if drawing energy from it. I also wanted to get silhouettes of beach walkers in the background to create an added layer for the scene.

I took this photo with an iPhone 12 Pro and edited in Snapseed to tune the image a bit to intensify the shadows and give the capture an overall glow. Just goes to show, it’s not the camera that makes the photo, but the photographer behind the camera. ”

The slide

Mobiography Photo Challenge: 14 Stunning Shadow and Silhouette Inspired Smartphone Photos 14

‘The slide’ by @alice1280 – “I love to go into the dunes when the gales have been blowing from different directions for a couple of days.
Early morning light is my favorite and the patterns are usually untouched.I am shadow hunting. Its useful to move around,
different positions produce a completely different picture. I have a few versions of this one.
As always edited With Snapseed.”
