Capturing the Moment in July – Edition 5

Here is another weekly showcase of a selection of images from the Mobiography Flickr Group. This week’s featured mobile photographers include Mark T Simmons, Alon Goldsmith, Mohsen Chinehkesh, JQ Gaines and Shel Sherkin.

Two Women (3)

‘Two Women (3)‘ by JQ Gaines – “This was one of my luckiest moments. I had been out and about doing some errands when my son called and asked me to bring him home an iced mocha. To be honest, I was annoyed with this request because it meant parking the car one more time, and running one more errand… on a brutally hot summer day. But he had been working hard on his summer homework, so I decided this would be a nice reward.

I drove over to our local coffee house, and went in to place my order. And while standing in line waiting for the barista to make the drink, I noticed this woman sitting at the back of the room. The more I observed her, the more I became visually intrigued. I desperately wanted to photograph her but because I was standing off to the side, I couldn’t get a good view. So, once my coffee was “up”… I put away my iPhone and headed towards the door.

However, just as I was about to walk outside, I noticed that the two men who were sitting at the table in front on her were packing up to leave. When I saw this, I immediately plopped my stuff down at a nearby table, pulled out my camera and ran over to take this photograph. I can’t tell you how much my heart leapt when I saw this picture on my Camera Roll… because I only had a few seconds to grab this shot… and all the visual elements were so beautifully aligned and composed.

I did absolutely nothing except aim and shoot. The best part for me, however, was that I no longer felt annoyed with my son. I attribute this photograph to a gift of Good Karma.”

Priorities

‘Priorities‘ by Mark T Simmons – “This image is from a new series I am putting together based around the East London area of Shoreditch.
Religion, the store, has been on Brick lane for a number of years and always seems to capture some great light during the late afternoon. As soon as I saw the girl sitting outside I knew I had a great image as her black dress and dyed blonde hair were perfect for black and white. She could not have picked a better place to sit and was so engrossed in her phone that I was able to take three shots before moving on.

I shot this with Hipstamatic BlacKeys SuperGrain film and John S lens and added a little contrast in Snapseed.”

Lean

‘Lean‘ by Alon Goldsmith – “The skateboarders at Venice Skate Park perplex me. The level of skill they achieve is staggering. Is Bill Gates as good at anything as these concrete warriors are at controlling wood, wheel and air? Dustin Hoffman? Lionel Messi? Barack Obama? How do my own achievements stack up against this? How do you define worth, value and success? ”

‘Untitled‘ by Mohsen Chinehkesh – “Although I’m always ready to take a photo on the streets and lots of my best shots have been captured during my daily commutes, sometimes I go out just for a photowalk. Having a photowalk lets me arrange the proper place and time to get my desired result or experience a specific situation. In this case I had decided to explore the last hours of the daylight and this shot was one my best outcomes.”

Shoppers

‘Shoppers‘ by Shel Serkin – “I happened upon this bench and its occupants walking along New York City’s 5th Avenue, the center of conspicuous consumption. I couldn’t have asked for a clearer image of economic inequality today than these two women, whose very postures speak to their life experiences and socio-economic situations. Shot with Hipstamatic Oggl and an iphone 5.”
