Following on from last years successful ’24 Mobile Photographers Til Christmas’ series and to celebrate the forthcoming festive season and another year in the timeline of Mobiography I have decided to repeat the series and showcase the work, thoughts and insights of 24 talented mobile photographers. Each featured photographer has inspired and supported me in one way or another during the course of the past 2 years and I will be asking them to offer an insight into their photography, to reflect on their year gone by or plans for the coming year ahead.
Each day until Christmas Eve we will be featuring one photographer in a sort of online advent calendar so to speak.
Today’s featured photographer is Todd Leban
My top tips or words of wisdom for aspiring mobile photographers are…
My advice to aspiring mobile photographers, or anyone pursuing creative endeavors, is to “Think Big, Start Small”. I feel it is important to approach things with this attitude. Remember to keep the bigger picture in mind, but be realistic about the necessary steps it takes to get there.
Too often I see people chasing unrealistic goals and not allowing their personal voice to grow organically. The element of play and experimentation is incredibly important in learning what the camera, apps, and artist can accomplish together. Build a small to moderate arsenal of apps, practice composition, and start to find which adjustments/effects accomplish the aesthetic you envision at that particular time. Eventually you will be able to recall some of your favorite techniques and develop a workflow that can be extended to create a body of work.
Long story short, have a goal in mind. Don’t shoot aimlessly and expect miracles. Shoot thoughtfully so you gain a sense of accomplishment, and draw the greatest potential out of each image. Lastly, seek out and learn from others. There are communities such as GRRYO and AMPt that have artists willing to share their knowledge and experience.
