One of the most exciting things about smartphone photography which sets itself apart from any other form of photography is the ease at which images can be taken, edited and processed. Using a variety of apps some truly amazing abstract and painterly works of art can be created. Such pieces look as if they would be at home in an art gallery and miles away from something which came from a smartphone.
This weeks Mobiography showcase features a selection of amazing abstract, painterly and arty photographs from J.D. Turner, Leon Williams, Jennifer Bracewell, Heiko Geerts, Louise Fryer, Lee Sternthal, lisamjw, Vivi Hanson, StickyQuote and Roger Guetta.

Post office
‘Post office‘ by J.D. Turner – “I shot an iPhone panorama in the lobby of my local post office on a routine trip to pick up some mail. I was intrigued by the grid of lines formed by the boxes. The result was okay, but the lines were somewhat static. A few days later, I popped it into the Tiny Planet FX app, just to see what might happen. It’s not an app that I use everyday, but it can produce some surprising and interesting effects. I also made a few basic corrections in Snapseed. I did all the editing on a 7″ Android tablet, zapping it over from the iPhone with the Photo Transfer App. I enjoy shooting on the iPhone, and editing on the larger screen of the tablet.”
Polished
‘Polished‘ by Leon Williams – “The shot started out as a photo of Kapiti, an island off shore from where we live. Then it somehow morphed into the image you see via the iColorama app, I’m still getting my head around this dark horse of an app, and nearly gave up on this image as I was trying for something quite different than what came out. I then decided to just let go and see where it took me, I tried so many options that I can’t even remember which ones they were there were so many. But I like what came out of it, hope you do too.”
My body tells me no but I won’t quit
‘My body tells me no but I won’t quit‘ by Jennifer Bracewell – “This image was taken with slow shutter. I have pneumonia for the umpteenth time and can’t go out to shoot so I chose a selfie (surprise) 🙂 I used Diana and got some interesting random blends. This was one of them. It’s a good app for ideas but doesn’t save full res. I then tweaked it a little in snapseed, just contrast and brightness. “
Week 10 Heiko
‘Week 10 Heiko‘ by heiko.geerts – “This is my last photograph of my year through project with my close friend Dennis Roodbol who is a professional artist. Every week we try to publish a photo in response to the previous.
I got inspired by an orchid which I had on the table and only got one flower left, so I wanted to do something with cutting or saving it. The proces was easy as well as hard. The easy thing was taking the picture in hipstamatic. Building the scene on the other hand was taken in ‘the smallest room’ in the house. Must have been hilarious to see me taking the picture.”
Cycle
‘Cycle‘ by Louise Fryer – “This image ‘Cycle’ represents change, new beginnings and life decisions. It was taken with the native iPhone 5s camera. I used Snapseed to crop and change the tone and ambience, the moon was created with Lenslight and Superimpose. I added the birds with DistressedFX and used Mextures to darken the background and add texture. I used ArtStudio to colour her nails and lips then finally Stackables to add the final texture.”
2012
‘2012‘ by Lee Sternthal – “I shot this photo of my fiancée, Louise Munson, in her afternoon bath. I love the intimacy of her bathing, and she doesn’t mind me hanging around every once in a while. Sometimes, I very quietly shoot photos of her, because, well, who wouldn’t? For me, the question is, how do you photograph a person bathing in an interesting way. Over our months and years together I have made many attempts; this is one of them. Shot with Jane/Robusta on iphone4s”
Tectonic Tremble

Tate Britain SlowShutter series 13
‘Tate Britain SlowShutter series 13‘ by Vivi Hanson – “I went for the first time to the beautiful Tate Britain Museum. Click_London had a meetup there. I am a big fan of the SlowShutter Cam app but have to practise a lot to get the right result. Tate Britain has a beautiful staircase so I stood at the top photographing people going up and down the stairs. Was really pleased with the results of this shot using SlowShutter Cam! I then edited the photo with Mextures and DistressedFX”
Still Life with Bathing Soul 001
‘Still Life with Bathing Soul 001‘ by StickyQuote – “Actually, what gave me the idea for this image was that we were sitting in our garden and a bird flew into the bird bath right next to our Calla Lillie’s and started bathing. Soon after the bird left and my wife said bathing soul. I shot this image with Hipstamatic Tinto1884/Blanko1 then I ran it into Mextures then took the original image and edited version and blended them together with Image Blender.”
Portrait ž
‘Portrait ž‘ by Roger Guetta – “This is a photograph of one of my theatre students, who posed for me after his midterm performance. I had just uploaded a new app named Gliché and used the ‘Scene’ function to slightly distort the image. Thereafter I finished up by tweaking in Snapseed. I like the dramatic and slightly unworldly look I achieved. ”

Wow! The “Post Office” piece is my favorite! It reminds me of Alice in Wonderland… Falling down, down, down the rabbit hole… But landing in a post office 🙂 Awesome!
What a fantastic showcase, an instant fav for the post office!!!!
