‘Untitled‘ by David DeNagel – “The image was taken in the Old Courthouse Building, in St.Louis, MO. The courthouse is an historical site originating in the 1830s and featuring many strong examples of period civic decor. The architecture and furnishings are varied and somewhat grand, with a mixture of art styles such as Classic Greek and Italian Renaissance. There is an atmosphere of age and retrospection in the building.
This was a place of trials and judgments. Its columns and high domed ceiling, in a way, reminded me, in spirit, of baroque etchings of churches, or prisons. The large rotunda, high skylights and circular balconies, all in a sort of crepuscular light, gave the building a secretive atmosphere, with mysterious mutterings and hidden chambers. The cast iron stairwells, that rose from the basement to the upper balcony were especially striking. The stairwell I photographed was dimly illuminated, on its main level, by one large window. The upper reaches of the stairs were lit by high, occasional ceiling lights. There was a gloomy aura about the heavy, ornate railings and the winding, wooden bannisters. I shot from the top looking down. I saw the descending, coiling stairwell as a sort of a dour metal whirlpool with no visible bottom, ending in darkness. In the past, there had been many footprints on those steps. But, except for mine at present, the stairwell was now empty and just waiting.
I shot and processed the image with Hipstamatic only. I used John S lens and Blackeys Supergrain film. No flash.”
Charlie and the Fragmented window
‘Charlie and the Fragmented window‘ by Elaine Taylor – “This is Charlie, sat at the window of our leisure centre on a grey and rainy day, while his little brother is having his swimming lesson. It’s a long half hour for Charlie. He usually passes the time by reading and playing Minecraft on his ipad. Sometimes he’ll just get up and sit by this window. The view is nothing special. I’m not sure he even notices it. He’s a daydreamer.
The original image was taken with Hipstamatic on my iphone4S. First step was to straightened and crop it in Snapseed. I wanted to make the window a little more interesting, and immediately turned to Fragment app. I love the app, and had kept this particular fragment effect in mind until I found an image to suit it.
I used image blender to tidy up the fragmented section, then took the image back into Snapseed to enhance the colour and contrast.”

‘Untitled‘ by Scott Simpson – “This was just a quick snap shot as I was walking around London recently, I’m currently doing a 365 project so I’m always looking out for something unusual or interesting to photograph, however I didn’t choose this image to be used as part of the project. The photo was shot with an iphone5 using Hipstamatic with Jane lens and W40 film. There was no post processing on the image but I normally use photoshop express or camera+ app on my iphone. Using the iphone5 is great and you can get some really interesting photos with it, totally different to the Nikon D3s that I use for my day job.”
Flinging in the Fog
‘Flinging in the Fog‘ by Alon Goldsmith – “Camera: iPhone 5. Oggl: Lens – Hornbecker (for high contrast) Film – Irom 2000. Post Production: Snapseed (changed to black and white and tuned for extra contrast).
As I mounted my bike, I had a sense that I was going to get something good thanks to the unusually thick fog along the coast. I had left work early because I wasn’t feeling well, so luckily it was still light. When I passed the gymnastic rings down by Muscle Beach, I was snapped out of my thick-headed flu zone by a girl flying from ring to ring with consummate grace. I flung my bike down and leapt somewhat less gracefully across the sand. As she reached the apex of her flow, almost taking my eye out with her pointed toes I might add, I raised my phone and tapped. Pow!”

Great selection of images. In my head Charlie from Elaine Taylor’s shot is daydreaming the rest of the images.
